How to Play Multi-Table Poker

There are several ways to increase your hourly rate when playing poker online. Of course you can get better at poker and simply earn more money per hand. You could also move up in stakes. However, if you are only playing one or two tables at a time, the simplest way to increase your hourly rate might simply be to play more tables. Perhaps you have considered this or even tried it with little success. You have seen stories of online pros playing up to 24 tables at one time and wonder how they do it. Well, I’m here to tell you that it is possible for you to play more tables than you are playing now, without sacrificing a lot of your per-hand winrate.

Okay, there’s the infomercial portion of the article. Are you sold? Now comes the information. How do we accomplish this?

Simply put, the best way to learn to play more tables is just to fire up your favorite site and open up one more table than you usually do. Sometimes its easier said than done however. Here is a simple guide for adding more tables and still playing solid poker.

Whatever stakes you are playing, move down one buy-in level. So if you are usually a $10 NL player, move down to $5 NL until you are comfortable playing more tables. When you are playing, make sure you are focused solely on playing poker. Turn off the television, close any other browsers you have open and any instant messenger programs. Many people do not realize how much time they actually have between hands because they are doing so many other things while playing poker.

It is best, according to most players, to use some sort of heads-up-display, or HUD, while multitabling. These are available from programs such as Poker Tracker or Hold’em Manager. They do not make decisions for you and are allowed by almost all poker sites (Cake Poker is one exception). They store and display information that you have collected from previous play against your opponents. Poker is often called a game of partial information and the more information you have, the easier your decisions become. You should know how to utilize this software before adding too many tables so that you are comfortable using it during play.

With only a few tables open, practice making quick decisions in small pots. Try not to always follow the action completely from one hand to the next. When playing a lot of tables at once it is very common to be forced to make a decision on a table without having watched any of the action. This decision must be made based on the information you have available – your opponents that have acted before you and the opponents who have yet to act. Then of course there are your cards, which should be considered once you assess the situation. Then make a decision and move on.

It is tempting to watch the hand play out, but try to resist this, at least while learning to multitable. It is much easier to keep up with the rest of your tables when you don’t have to wait for everyone else to act after you. Remember that in poker, the outcome is often not relevant to whether or not you made the right play. Do not let yourself become tilted by watching a big pot get shipped to the “donk” who just sucked out on you. You have other tables to worry about and being upset about something you cannot control will do you no good.

Something you should keep in mind is that many of the players sitting on 20 or more tables at once are not winning players in the traditional sense. Many of them are rakeback pros or player point pros who do not have a positive winrate but make money from VIP programs and rakeback payments. However, playing solid, profitable poker should really be the goal, so once you get to where you are very comfortable playing a lot of tables, try different numbers. You will likely find that you have a breaking point, where if you play X number of tables, you have a solid winrate, but if you play X + 1, you actually make less money.

Once you are comfortable with the  number of tables you are currently playing, try adding one or two more. You will find that with just a little practice, playing multiple tables of online poker is not nearly as difficult as you once thought.
