Building Pots in Low Limit Holdem

It’s a great thing to catch a strong hand in a low limit game because the players in those games are so loose and willing to pay you off. There’s always a risk that you get sucked out on but that’s the price you pay for playing in such easy games. The following strategies will help you build the biggest pots possible in small stakes poker games.

1. Bet and Raise

I’ve seen too many players fall into fancy play syndrome and try to build the pot through all sorts of complicated, tricky maneuvers. The best way to build big pots in low limit games is to place bets and raises. Small stakes poker players like to chase draws and call bets with weak hands so go ahead and oblige them! The fundamental goal of poker is to get as much money in the middle as possible when you have strong hands.

There are several reasons why the best strategy for building pots is to start betting early. First of all, it charges your opponents to chase their draws. They won’t chase their draws if you wait until the river to bet because there aren’t any more cards to come. You need to place those bets while your opponents still have some hope of hitting a stronger hand.

Secondly, if you start betting early, it builds the pot up to be larger on the turn and river. This increases the chances of you getting calls from your opponents on the turn and river. They will be more willing to call in that case because your bets look small in comparison to the size of the pot.

Finally, you should start betting early because it gives your low limit opponents more opportunities to make mistakes. 3. Consider the checkraise

The checkraise announces power but it also traps your opponents into calling two bets rather than just a single bet. You have to be careful with the checkraise in low limit games, however, because the players in low limit games aren’t very aggressive. The checkraise carries with it a risk that nobody else bets and you miss out on your checkraise.

The best time to use the checkraise is on the flop when the bets are smaller and when there are several other people in the pot with you. The reason for this is simply because there’s a greater chance that someone other than you has a decent hand. If several players call a single bet and then you come in with a checkraise, those players will be likely to call that second bet simply because of the size of the pot.
