Low Limit Holdem Strategy: The Turn

The turn is a key “turning” point in a hand of Texas Holdem. Two things happen that affect the players still involved in the pot: the bets get bigger and the odds of hitting draws are cut in half. There’s only one more card to come so the players have to start thinking about getting out if their hands haven’t yet turned into anything strong.

Turn Strategy with Strong Hands

If you have a strong hand on the turn, the bigger bet sizes give you a new opportunity to get more money in the middle. There’s a chance the larger bets scare off some of your opponents but it’s better to bet now than to let them draw for free. Your goal is to collect as much money as possible as soon as possible.

Many of your opponents will have draws at this point so it’s important to bet and get value for those draws. If you wait until the river to bet, your opponents with draws won’t call unless they hit their draws. It’s better to bet now and risk causing folds than it is to wait until the river and risk even more folds. Betting with strong hands is just good poker.

Turn Strategy with Marginal Hands

The proper strategy on the turn with marginal hands is to play it slow and try to see the river as cheaply as possible. If you start to see action in the hand, you’ll have to fold because you’re most likely beaten. The only time I would recommend sticking around with a marginal hand is when you’re playing heads up against an aggressive opponent. In most cases, though, you’ll want to fold. Low limit games are not overly aggressive.

If you’re unsure of what to do, stop and think about this: if you’re not betting and raising, is your hand really strong enough to call? It’s tempting to put money in the middle sometimes but you need to make sure your hand really deserves sticking around. If you’re not the one doing the betting, you probably shouldn’t be in the hand.

Turn Strategy with Draws

Draws suddenly become twice as expensive and half as likely to hit on the turn. You need to have either a very strong draw or a large pot to continue on with draws on the turn. If neither one of those factors are present, the best move is to fold and try again next time.

The occasional semi-bluff on the turn is also a viable alternative. Semi-bluffs give you a chance to win the pot outright without even having to hit your draw. The bigger bet sizes also make it more difficult for your opponents to call without a real hand. If you get caught, it’s not the end of the world, either. You may still improve your hand and your opponents will see that you don’t have to have the nuts to place a bet.

Turn Strategy with Weak Hands

Weak hands should almost always be checked and folded on the turn. Calls should never be made on the hopes of improving to a better hand and winning the pot. If the hand isn’t made by the turn, it’s not worth paying to try to improve.

Bluffs are a viable option but you need to be careful with bluffs in low limit Holdem games. The players in these games are notoriously loose and will not fold as easily as you might imagine. The best strategy is to play a tight, straightforward game and use value bets to make your money.
