Low Limit Holdem Strategy: The Flop

The flop is the biggest influx of information you’ll receive about your hand. Three community cards are dealt all at once and you will instantly know whether or not your hand has any potential. The key to playing the flop profitably is to be decisive and stick with that tight-aggressive strategy I always recommend.

It’s critical to make smart decisions on the flop because these decisions will affect the rest of  your hand. The bet sizes are still small but mistakes here can cost you big later on in the hand. Optimally, you will either have a strong hand and start building a pot or you’ll have a weak hand and drop it instantly.

Marginal hands are a little more difficult to play but you should lean towards folding them the majority of the time. If you don’t have a hand that isn’t worth betting or raising with, it probably isn’t worth calling with either. There are exceptions to that rule, of course, but for the most part it holds true.

Strong Hands on the Flop

The definition of a strong hand depends on the number of players in the pot and the board texture. Any top pair hand can be considered strong in a pot against a single opponent on a safe board. If there are several people in the pot, you’ll need to have at least top pair, top kicker to consider it a strong hand.

Your default play with strong hands should be to bet and raise them as much as possible. The purpose of playing your strong hands fast is to get more money in the pot while you have the lead and to charge your opponents to draw. Slowplaying should be kept to a minimum unless you have the deck completely locked down with something like a full house or flush on the flop.

Marginal Hands on the Flop

If you hit a piece of the board but don’t have top pair, you can consider it a marginal hand. The correct play with marginal hands is to check them with the intention of folding to any bet. If you can see a free card and improve, that’s great but it’s not a big deal either way.

The only time I recommend you stick with a marginal hand on the flop is if you’re up against a single overaggressive opponent. The opponent needs to be clearly out of line to make it worth calling on the flop. Remember that bets on the flop are just a preview of things to come. Bets on the turn and river are going to cost twice as much.

Drawing Hands on the Flop

Hands such as flush and straight draws are fun to play but you shouldn’t spend money chasing those draws unless you have the right odds to chase. Most of the time, you’ll have poor odds and have to fold. If you don’t yet know how to calculate odds on draws, take a few minutes to learn about pot odds and counting outs. It’s not as difficult as it sounds.

The occasional semi-bluff can be used if you’re up against a single opponent and you think there’s a chance he’ll fold. Semi-bluffs should be used sparingly in low limit games, though, because small stakes players don’t like to fold. This is especially true in fixed limit where a single bet doesn’t look like much money.

Weak Hands on the Flop

Weak hands are hands that completely missed the flop or are extremely weak compared to the board. For example, a middle pair type of hand might be considered marginal on a normal flop but if the flop is mono-suited and there are four players in the pot, you can consider it a weak hand.

Check and fold weak hands on the flop. Under no circumstances should you call a bet and hope to improve to a real hand on the turn or river. You can bluff with weak hands but make sure you only do so against a single opponent who is capable of folding. Anything else is a waste of money.
