Playing Low Limit Holdem in Loose Games

The majority of low limit Holdem games you find can be classified as loose games. In these games, the players like to play more starting hands than they should and they like to call more bets after the flop than they should. These games are the ones you should look for because they offer the most opportunity for profit.

The following tips will help you take advantage of the weak players in loose small stakes poker games. These strategies will inevitably lead to increased profits over the long term but don’t be surprised if you see a lot of variance in the short term. Loose poker games are full of players who makes lots of bad calls and who will place the occasional bad beat on you. If you stick with these strategies, however, you will eventually take all their money.

1. Play a tight, straightforward game

This is the ultimate key to beating loose small stakes games. The other tips on this page are useful but none of them will help you win as much money as this single tip. A tight, straightforward game means you are selective in choosing your starting hands and then only put money in after the flop when you have a legitimate hand.

When I say to play a tight preflop game, I do not mean for you to play an overly tight preflop game. In loose poker games that feature lots of players seeing the flop, you have the odds to play a wider range of hands. These games do not have a lot of preflop raising but they do have a lot of players limping in and building up the pot. In late position, you’ll have the opportunity to see the flop with a wider range of hands than in tight games.

After the flop, you should play a straightforward game because that’s the best way to make money. Bluffs are practically worthless in low limit Holdem games because the players in those games call so often. Instead, wait for strong hands after the flop and then bet those hands for value when you get them.

2. Don’t be afraid to raise before the flop

Many players say its pointless to raise before the flop in small stakes poker games because so many other players will just call anyways. I can understand where these players are coming from but that strategy simple isn’t correct. Strong hands make money over the long run because they are more likely to win pots than other hands. Raising before the flop gets more money in the middle with these hands and therefore increases your long term win rate.

Strong hands before the flop don’t always equate to strong hands after the flop. Hands like AK won’t hit every time so you have to be willing to drop these hands if they don’t pan out. That does not mean these hands should be limped in before the flop, however. These hands win more than their fair share of pots and will show a profit if you play them strongly before the flop.

3. Stay cool

Loose low limit games can be endlessly frustrating when things don’t go your way. There will be times when it seems like every donkey hits his draws against you and shows down ridiculous hands that somehow take the pot. You have to stay cool even during the worst days because to lose your temper will only invite even more trouble.

If your emotions start to affect your play, the best strategy is to step away from the tables and take the rest of the day off. Those bad days happen to even the best players and the only thing you can do is wait for it to pass. A break from the tables will help you collect yourself and return later with a clear and untroubled mind.
