Playing Low Limit Holdem in Tight Games
Most low limit Holdem games can be classified as loose but it’s not uncommon to run across the occasional tight low stakes game online. These games are characterized by players who fold often before the flop and are reluctant to put money in after the flop without a strong hand. These games may not be the most exciting but they can still beaten with the right strategy.
The best strategy of all is to simply avoid such games. One of the greatest benefits of online poker is the ability to select from hundreds of different tables. If you find yourself in a tight low limit Holdem game, there’s really nothing that says you have to stick it out. The best bet is to just leave the table and find a new one. If that’s not an option for some reason, the following strategies will help you make the most of your time at the table.
1. Test Your Boundaries
The first thing you should do in a tight low limit Holdem game is find out what kind of shenanigans your opponents will let you get away with. Try stealing the blinds a few times and see if they’ll let you win a few pots without much effort. All it takes is a few blind steals every hour to turn a profit in a tight game.
Also, try testing your opponents after the flop. More specifically, note how easy it is to get them to fold on the flop and turn. If a single bet is all it takes to win a pot, you might actually have a gold mine on your hands. Once again, it doesn’t take many of these pots to turn a tidy profit in low limit Holdem games.
If your opponents are both tight and aggressive, they won’t let you pull off these moves very frequently. In that case, you’re just at a bad table and there’s nothing you can do. If you feel like you have an advantage, you can stay but it probably won’t do you much good in a tight-aggressive game. Your time would be better spent reading up on poker strategy or enjoying your day doing something else.
2. Read Their Hands
One good thing about tight players is that it’s fairly easy to put them on hands. This is especially true in small stakes games where tight players don’t mix up their game very often. These players will typically only put money in the pot when they have a strong hand or if they are placing a normal continuation bet.
Once you get a read on a tight player, you can play a nearly optimal game against that player. You’ll have a pretty good idea of when that player has a legitimate hand and when he missed the flop. You can then bet aggressively when you think that player is weak and you can fold when he shows strength.
3. Change Gears
Tight poker players differ from most other poker players because they actually pay attention to the rest of the table. One thing you can do to throw tight players off their game is to switch up your playing style on a frequent basis. Play a loose-aggressive style until the tight player adjusts to you and then switch to a tight-aggressive strategy.
By changing gears frequently, you increase the odds that the tight player makes a mistake against you. For example, if the tight player thinks you’re still playing a loose-aggressive game when you’ve actually switched to a tight-aggressive game, he will be more likely to call your bets with weaker hands than he normally would. On the other hand, if he thinks you’re playing a tight game, you can get away with stealing more pots for a short time.
