Low Limit Holdem Postflop Strategy In Early Position

Early position is the most difficult position to play from after the flop. The problem is that you have to act first without knowing what the rest of the table has in mind. The opponents have the advantage of seeing your move before they have to act. The best way to play after the flop in early position is to be very tight and to fold unless you have a strong hand.

Hopefully you will at least have strong cards in your hand. The only time you should have anything less than a premium starting hand is when you were in the big blind preflop or if you were in the small blind and had great odds to see a flop. The good news about playing postflop in early position is that it’s fairly straightforward: if you have a strong hand, bet. If you have anything else, check. That’s about all there is to it. The other players’ actions will tell you what to do after that. The only time you should call bets from early position are when you have a draw and are getting the right odds to chase or when you are slowplaying a very strong hand.

Strong Hands

Most strong hands should be bet right off the bet to get money in the middle and charge draws. This is the simplest way to build the pot and win money in low limit Holdem games. It also opens up the opportunity for someone else to raise you and start a betting war.

Your other option with strong hands is to checkraise. That’s the one benefit you gain by being in early position. If you check and someone else bets, you can trap more money with your strong hand. But remember there’s no guarantee someone else will bet if you check. Small stakes Holdem players aren’t exactly known for their aggression.

Marginal Hands

It’s really not worth messing with marginal hands unless you’re up against a single opponent who is insanely aggressive. There are just too many things working against you from early position. The bets might be cheap on the flop but they will quickly get expensive on the turn and river. If you don’t have a strong hand, you should be checking and folding.

Don’t even think about checking and calling in an attempt to improve to a better hand. You’ll lose a lot of money with such passive play. Just fold your hand and wait for the next round of cards. One of the biggest mistakes new players make after the flop is holding on to marginal hands for far too long.

Weak Hands

Weak hands should be checked and folded with almost no exceptions. You have very little chance to win the pot – especially from early position. Thoughts of bluffing should be dismissed 90% of the time. You have no idea what the other opponents are going to do because you haven’t yet seen them act.

The only time I would recommend a bluff from early position is if you raised before the flop and only a single opponent called you. In that case, there’s a decent chance you’ll get that opponent to fold. If he calls your bet, you might as well give up on the hand. Second barrel bluffs rarely work in low limit Holdem.

Drawing Hands

Draws should be checked and folded unless you are getting great odds to call. There are multiple problems with playing drawing hands in early position: you don’t know how much it’s going to cost to continue chasing that draw, you probably won’t have the odds to chase and even if you do hit, it’s going to be harder to extract money from your opponents.
