Low Limit Post Flop Strategy in Middle Position

Post flop play in middle position is fairly straightforward in low limit Holdem games. You have the advantage of position over the early position players but you still have to look out for the players yet to act. The best strategy, therefore, is to play a normal tight-aggressive game. Place bets when you have strong hands, fold when you have weak hands and play your draws according to the pot odds.

For the purpose of this article, assume that I’m always talking about situations in which you have at least one player in front of you and one behind you. If you find yourself in middle position but there is nobody to act behind you, you are essentially in late position. The same thing goes for when there is nobody in front of you. In this article, we’re going to be referring to those situations in which you have players on both sides.

Your play in middle position needs to remain somewhat straightforward because there are still players to act behind you. You can open up a little bit if there’s only one player back there but you can’t get too wild yet. There’s still no telling what the players behind you have planned. A straightforward game will usually serve you best in this situation.

Strong Hands in Middle Position

Strong hands are pretty easy to play at all positions. The best default play is to bet your strong hands as soon as possible in order to get money in the pot and charge your opponents to draw. If you have an extremely strong hand, however, a little slowplaying can encourage the other players to stay in and contribute to the pot.

One advantage of you have in middle position is the ability to get overcalls. What that means is if someone bets in front of you, you have the option to call rather than raise. The idea here is that there’s a chance you’ll get additional calls from the players behind you. If you raise, there’s less chance to get those extra calls because it will cost those other players two bets cold to stay in.

The risk you assume in going for the overcall is that you miss out on a profitable betting war with the player who made the bet in front of you. If you suspect your opponent has a strong hand, the best play by far is to raise. This is especially true if there’s only one opponent behind you. A player who makes a bet is likely to also call a raise. First of all, there’s a good chance that person has a strong hand because he placed the bet from early position. Secondly, that opponent will find it difficult to fold to just a single raise after putting money in the pot.

Strong hands that are vulnerable to draws should be played aggressively every time. You don’t want to let your opponents draw for free. Make those bets and let your opponents decide if its worth chasing.

Weak and Marginal Hands in Middle Position

Weak hands should be checked and folded in middle position. If you don’t have anything, there’s no point in putting more money in the pot. Marginal hands should usually be folded unless you have great odds to try and improve. When I say great odds, I mean great odds, not good odds. It’s risky to try to improve marginal hands because if your opponent already has a premium hand, you are usually drawing dead. In that case, the worst thing that can happen is you improve to a second best hand and lose a lot of money.

Drawing Hands in Middle Position

Drawing hands should be played according to the pot odds in middle position. If you’re getting the odds to chase, go ahead and call that bet. Just don’t forget that you still have people to act behind you. If one of those players puts in a raise, it’s going to cost you that much more to chase your draw.
