Middle Limit Texas Holdem Preflop Strategy: Early Position

This strategy article covers middle limit texas holdem preflop strategy when you are seated in early position. Early position is when you are sitting in one of the first three spots immediately after the big blind.

Being seated in early position since you are first or among the first to act, you have very little information about the strength of your opponent’s hands. Because of this lack of information you’ll want to enter the pot with a very strong hand that will stand up to raises and reraises.

Hands that you should be looking to play if there have been no raises before you (if you’re in the seat immediately after the blind, the pot of course, couldn’t be raised, but if you are in the second or third seat after the big blind it may be a raised pot) are:

A-A, K-K, Q-Q, J-J, T-T, A-K suited, A-Q suited, A-J suited. I’d occasionally play A-K offsuit and A-J offsuit.

With all of these hands you want to come in with a raise.

Other hands to consider if the pot has not been raised are 9-9, 8-8, K-Q suited and A-T suited. But I like to play these hands only after I have gotten a chance to see what the competition is like. Am I up against good players, real good players, tight game, loose game etc… I’ll play them occasionally in a loose game by calling.

So far we’ve covered hands in early position where no one has raised. But what if a player before you has raised? I’d definitely reraise if I had A-A, K-K and Q-Q. If I have A-K I’ll mix-up my play by sometimes reraising and sometimes calling the bet.

Hands that I’d call with if the pot was raised before me are J-J, T-T, A-Q suited and A-J suited.

With so many more players yet to go early position can be a tough spot to be in especially just a few hands into the game when we don’t know much about our opponents.
