Low Limit Postflop Strategy in Late Position

Late position is the best position to be in after the flop because you have options and the advantage of information. When you are in late position, you get to see what everyone does before you act. At the same time, your opponents tend to play a more straightforward game because they don’t know what you have in mind. Out of all the positions at the table, late position is the one in which you’ll make the majority of your money.

Strong Hands in Late Position

Strong hands are all kinds of fun to play in late position thanks to that advantage of information. The best way to play strong hands in late position depends partially on how many people are in the pot and how vulnerable your hand is to draws. The more vulnerable your hand is, the more necessary it becomes to make bets and raises as soon as possible.

In other situations, you can play your strong hands a little slower on the flop. Against a single opponent, for example, you might want to give him an additional card to catch a second best hand. But even then I would lean towards betting the majority of the time. The simple fact that you are in late position means that your bets are likely to be called. There’s always a chance your opponents think your late position bets are attempts to steal the pot.

Drawing Hands in Late Position

Drawing hands are also pretty easy to play in late position because you get to see exactly how much it will cost to see the next card. There’s no worry about players behind you putting in a raise and making it more expensive to see the next card. All you have to know in late position is how likely it is for your draw to hit. You also have the option to semi-bluff with your drawing hands in late position. If nobody else has placed a bet, you can occasionally use a semi-bluff to try and take the pot without a showdown. The fact that nobody has yet shown interest in the pot means there’s a decent chance you take the pot down. Your opponents may suspect you are stealing the pot but it still beats trying to semi-bluff from early position.

Just remember that in low limit Holdem games, the players don’t like to fold. If there are several people in the pot or you are up against a loose player, the semi-bluff should be avoided. Semi-bluffs against loose players serve only to make your own draw more expensive.

Some draws can actually be value-bet in late position. If the pot is big enough and there are enough people in the hand, bets with strong draws can are profitable. For example, if you have a flush draw (2:1 to hit with two cards to come) and there are four other players in the pot, you will profit by betting and getting a call from all those players. There’s no guarantee everyone will call, of course, but low limit Holdem games can be pretty loose at times.

Weak and Marginal Hands in Late Position

Weak and marginal hands should be played in a straightforward manner in late position. Low limit Holdem games are so loose that bluffs are rarely worth the risk. You can try the occasional bluff against a single opponent but that’s about it. In pots that are contested by multiple players, the odds of a bluff working are slim.

Marginal hands should be played in much the same manner. If you have a super loose table and nobody else has shown interest in the hand, there’s a chance you have the best hand at the table. Feel free to place a value bet and see what happens. Your opponents will call with all sorts of junky hands. Just be prepared to throw the hand away if someone suddenly turns the tables on you with bets of their own.
